Gear

We wanted to create something that would handle a couple of different roles, with obviously your equipment slots for what we call a "paper doll", which is that display of your character. Eventually it won't just be a image of your character, we hope to have the 3D character and be able to rotate around, look at what you're wearing. And then we wanted to support a couple of different features here, with some base stats; the equipment, which will show what equipment you have available to quick swap, so you don't have to have your inventory and the screen open; detailed stats for those people who want to get into all of the details; and then of course gear sets. So this is going to be able to swap to your sets of gear quickly; and being able to save different loadouts.[1] – Colby Marchi
There are multiple gear slots in Ashes of Creation.[1]
- Artisan gear may be able to be equipped in an "undergarment" slot that can be toggled between adventuring gear and artisan gear.[2]
- Previously it was stated there were 16 gear slots.[3]
Gear (weapons and armor) has approximately a 40-50% influence on a player's overall power in the game.[5]
- There are no stat requirements for equipping gear, but there are affiliation and level requirements.[6][7][8]
- We have level requirements that are going to be applicable for particular types of gears. There's going to be affiliation requirements for certain types of gear as well; but from a stat perspective we decided not to go down that route; and the only reason for that is we don't want to shoehorn people into particular types of builds; and stats relate to those particular types of builds because there's a lot of versatility that exists within our class system. They don't have to play it per-se and that kind of lends itself to a meta. It's like, oh you're a tank where you have to tank constitution and if you don't take constitution you don't get access to this really cool tank breastplate. You know stuff like that. It can feel a little too restrictive when you start to dictate from a stat perspective how a player must build their character.[6] – Steven Sharif
- Specific and necessary crafting materials for higher tier items can only be obtained through the deconstruction of lower-tier items. This is designed to keep lower tier crafted gear relevant through progression and across expansions.[9]
- A big component of gear usefulness or relevancy, as either you're progressing or as expansions come out or whatnot, is that there is a deconstruction method associated with gear; and that deconstruction can provide very specific and necessary crafting materials that can only be achieved through deconstruction of certain types of gears. And then additionally as we consider expansions and additional itemization paths and tiers going forward, all gear is going to remain relevant within the tiers that they exist. So from a progression standpoint, as you achieve access to different types of tiers, those gears are still going to have relevancy within that tier.[9] – Steven Sharif
Gear types

We like to really refer to ourselves as a PvX game, because in those systems of PvP, PvE, crafting they're all intertwined: They're interdependent on each other... Our system of development really requires some interdependence there between those things. You're going to need a crafter to give you the best items. You're going to need PvPers to secure cities and castles. You're gonna need PvErs to take down those world bosses for those materials to craft.[10] – Steven Sharif
Ashes is a comprehensive game. It is not a PvP focused or a PvE focused, it is a comprehensive PvX game and as a result these systems are all interconnected and have to coexist with one another with certain types of mechanisms that can provide that give and take, that push and shove.[11] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation is a PvX game. Players will naturally encounter both PvP and PvE elements.[11][12][13] It is unlikely that a player could purely focus on just PvP or just PvE.[13]
- There is a balance between PvP and PvE in Ashes of Creation.[13] Around 80% of the content is open-world, where healthy competition is an instigator for player friction; for potential cooperation; for the ability to yield alliances; and the political theater that comes with it. This is an intended part of the PvX design of Ashes of Creation.[14][15][16][17]
- There won't be separate PvE and PvP servers but some servers may be more PvP focused than others.[12][19]
- There will not be different PvP and PvE gear types.[20]
- Progression in the game might require PvE elements.[13]
We're very clear with our objective and philosophy on the game and we understand that they may not appeal to everybody. But you know it is an important reciprocal relationship between the content that's related to PvE and the content that's related to PvP and they feed off of each other. They're catalysts for change: Their progression, their development. It's things that people can value when they see something earned and they see something lost. That elicits an emotional response from the player: That they've invested time in to either succeed or fail; and PvP allows for that element to be introduced into gameplay. And we're very clear that is our objective: That risk versus reward relationship, that achievement-based mentality. Not everybody's going to be a winner and that's okay.[17] – Steven Sharif
Weapon types
Different weapon types offer different passive skills and proc effects from their weapon skill tree as well as different waterfall stats.[22]
- Axes (One and two handed).[23]
- Bows.[23]
- Clubs.[24]
- Daggers.[23]
- Hammers.[25][26]
- Lances.[27]
- Maces (One and two handed).[23]
- Orbs.[28][23]
- Polearms/Halberds.[23]
- Scepters.[29]

- Spellbooks.[28][23]
- Staves.[23]
- Swords/Rapiers (One and two handed).[23][32]
- Wands.[28][33]
The following weapon types are not equippable by players in the MMO.
- Crossbows will not be in the MMO.[34][35]
- Previously crossbows were present in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[36][37]
- Potion launchers will only be able to be used as ship attachments in the MMO.[38][39]
- Previously potion launchers were present in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[37][40]
There is an even split between melee and ranged weapons.[23]

Skills and stats on gear
Crafters will be able to assign different skills/abilities and stats on gear.[56][57]
- Master crafters will be able to influence several (but not all) stats on their crafted items.[56][58]
- Stats on crafted items will vary based on the item's rarity.[59]
- There will also be methods of moving stat blocks around but this won't necessarily be an easy task.[60][56]
- All gear will be able to be assigned any stat.[56]
Crafters will be able to 'rejigger' stat blocks; and there will be a couple of other ways to move things around to create both the look and the stat block that you're looking for. It's not always going to be easy. There will be a lot of challenges involved with that. But the goal is to give you guys the option to customize your gear the way you want them to be.[56] – Jeffrey Bard
Not all armor sets will be the cookie cutter kind of set. They will have the influences from the crafter available in it, if it's a crafted set.[57] – Steven Sharif
Gear is broken down into Core Stats and Additional Stats.[61]
Best-in-slot items
- Crafted items are best-in-slot in Ashes of Creation.[62] Previously it was stated that crafted items will be on-par with best-in-slot items.[63]
- What is considered best-in-slot is based on a character's role and the type of monster they are facing.[64]
- Instanced content will contain scripted and difficult boss fights that drop gear, but the gear drops will not be best-in-slot. These can only be found in the open world.[65]
Gear sets
We're going relatively traditional in the gear access points by being driven by level tier that players will have access to. So as you advance in your adventuring class you will begin to unlock the ability to equip gear of a higher level.[7] – Steven Sharif
Gear sets (also known as tier sets) are a part of Ashes of Creation.[7][8]
- Different tiers of gear are accessible based on a character's level.[7][8]
- Players gain bonuses depending on the number of pieces of the set they have equipped.[7][8]
- There are passive abilities that can be chosen to become more adept with certain set types.[8]
- There will be viable non-set builds.[69]
- Racial appearance of gear sets is tied to the character model of that race.[70]
- It may be possible to store and swap gear sets with a single button press when out of combat.[71]
Approximately 49 unique gear sets are obtainable in Alpha-1 from crafting, quests, drops and exploration.[72]
- These are unique sets with different stats, but some may be similar in appearance.[72]

Artisan gear
Artisan gear will boost artisans in their gathering, processing, or crafting professions.[2][73]
- Artisan gear may be able to be equipped in an "undergarment" slot that can be toggled between adventuring gear and artisan gear.[2]
- The developers are planning to have artisan gear sets available for Alpha-2.[2]
- Gear for artisans are going to live alongside your adventuring gear. So you will currently- the approaches, and we'll test this but currently- the approach is you'll have artisanship oriented gear. This might be beneficial for your gathering; it might be beneficial for your processing, or crafting, or whatever it is- your profession. Essentially you will craft that gear, you will equip that gear, it'll live almost as a undergarment slot so to speak; and then you can activate that and it will show the appearance if you wish during the activation when you gain the benefit from the from the gear itself; and then could disappear afterwards and go back to your adventuring gear. That's the current approach. We're going to play with that a little bit. There's some discussion and disagreement on the team about how we do that, but our hopes are for Alpha two, we will have I think a couple of sets at least. We're demonstrating all of the artisanship from gathering to processing to crafting in limited fashion in Alpha 2 want to have that gear present to kind of play with this approach.[2]
Gear binding
There may be some gear binding (BoE or BoP) but it will be an exception rather than the rule, as this doesn't facilitate the objectives for the economy.[74]
- Very little gear will be account bound or soulbound in Ashes of Creation.[75][76]
- The game economy is based around crafting and degradation of items.[75]
- Gear is obtained via crafting, gathering and processing along with raid and dungeon bosses.[76]
A lot of what we experienced in games that usually come before us is that many things are account bound and they're soulbound to your character... Instead very little here is character bound. Very very little. The vast majority of gear- yes you will get quest related gear as rewards- but it won't be let's say one set in one dungeon and you must run the dungeon over and over. Instead we want to really emphasize the reliance on the economy and crafters and gatherers and processors to support a majority of the gear structure in-game, combined with that of world raid bosses and dungeon bosses; not a repetitive quest line through a single dungeon.[76] – Steven Sharif
Grinding
Repetition will not be part of progression in Ashes of Creation.[77]
- There will be no "grindy" quests.[77]
- There will not be repetitive quest lines through a single dungeon to obtain gear.[76]
- The aspiration is to have more things to do in the game than a player has time to do.[77]
Gear enhancement
Gear enhancements (power stones/runes) can be applied to weapons to add elemental or energy types of damage.[78][79]
- Gear enhancements do not increase an item's level requirement.[80]
We are very likely going to have a rune system and then we'll have the ability to sort of enchant weapons outside of that too... That's not always going to be like a vertical progression... Some of it's going to be giving up something to get something else; so maybe I do less physical damage but more magical damage, that kind of thing.[79] – Jeffrey Bard
- Progression in various PvP systems will unlock enchantment stones that grant temporary PvP-focused benefits to gear (via a socketing system).[81] Performance is measured over six month PvP seasons.[82]
It's not as though you're going to necessarily acquire these once and then you're set for your PvP enchantments, but instead you'll have to continually perform month after month in order to keep having those slotted enchantments.[81] – Steven Sharif
Enchanting
Enchanting is not an artisan profession in its own right. Scribes create scrolls that can be utilized by different professions to create enchantments relating to that profession.[83][84]
- Enchantment scrolls can be sold on the open market.[83][85]
- Enchanting does not increase an item's level requirement.[80]
- You don't really push a particular item's level requirement or the identity of that item. You can enhance it, you can add enchantments to it, but it's still the item it is.[80] – Steven Sharif
- Enchanting weapons applies visual effects, such as glows and colors.[42]
Power creep
The developers intend to limit power creep via item sinks, the lack of gear binding, and the absence of pay-to-win or pay-to-convenience in Ashes of Creation.[86]
Items on back and belt

The idea is to kind of move away from the mundane kind of application of belts in previous MMOs where they don't really have a lot of character so to speak. But in reality you know as an adventurer you come with a lot of tools and things that you have to use out in the wild in order to achieve what you're trying to achieve. So we wanted to kind of represent that on your character and give you something that can actually be tangible for your character and see there. I think it adds a lot of character and flavor to your identity.[88] – Steven Sharif

A big component of the MMORPG that - half of that you know acronym is RPG role-playing game. And in order to role-play you need to be able to represent kind of what your character is doing in that world and you know part of what animation is doing is creating these sockets on the let's say the belt or the back that you know can plug in certain types of props or items that are created by the character team, like Carson, you know might be a scroll tube, it might be a potion, it might be whatever: Those players will have the ability as we've discussed in the past will have the ability to select what they want to be represented in those sockets and then animation will make sure that jibe well in movement.[87] – Steven Sharif
Back slots include.[90]
- Weapon.[91] Previously this was stated as a ranged weapon.[92][90]
- Shield.[92][90]
- Cloak/Cape.[91][92][90]
- Accessory (backpack etc).[91][90]
Belt slots (hip slots) include.[92][90]
Players can set the appearance priority for the items they wish to show.[92][93][94] Only one item can show at a time, and that is determined by player choice.[90]
- There'll be a priority system behind that that'll determine... do I show the Bow if the Greatsword is unequipped or do I show the Polearm if the Greatsword is unequipped.[94] – Jeffrey Bard
Some ranged or melee abilities require a specific weapon to be equipped. Weapons that are equipped in the character's ranged or offhand slots will automatically swap in and out as required by the skill.[95][96][97]
- Weapons are able to be sheathed.[90][98]
- Idle animations will be selectible by players in the character creator.[99]
Ranged weapons
A character may equip up to two hand weapons and also wear a ranged weapon on their back.[96][97][90]
- Characters performing ranged abilities will switch to the ranged weapon, then can switch back to the melee weapon and shield or two-handed melee weapon.[96][97]
- There will be a setting to determine if the ranged weapon or main/offhand selection is your primary weapon to use for Q or left-mouse-button basic attacks.[96][97]
- Let's say you use Power shot: You click Power shot, you quickly switch over to the ranged weapon, execute the skill, and you're back to your primary focus, which is the the sword and shield; and then for weapon attacks like your Q or your left mouse button, you would have the option to to set which is your focus, the ranged weapon, or the main offhand selection and you can swap back and forth between that as you want.[96] – Steven Sharif
Rangers are going to have a minimum distance requirement where they are eligible to use their ranged weapons.[100]
- While melee characters have a max distance proximity where they're eligible to use their sword and melee weapons, Rangers are going to have a minimum distance requirement.[100] – Steven Sharif
Melee weapons

You can see by the quality of these types of weapons: these are relatively lower level. These are some of the earliest types of weapons and or gear that you can acquire within Ashes of Creation.[102] – Steven Sharif
Melee weapons have a maximum range of effect.[100]
Dual wielding
Dual wielding will be permitted for selected one handed weapons.[104][105]
- Dual weapons are treated as single items that when equipped will occupy both main and off-hand gear slots.[104]
- There is a limited selection of weapons that can be dual wielded.[104]
- Shields cannot be dual wielded.[106][105]
- Great swords probably can't be dual wielded.[107]
- Q: How will animations work while dual wielding weapons of A) a different type, for example an axe and a dagger; or B) different weapon speeds?
- A: Dual weapons will have their own animation sets; and... there will be a limited selection of which weapons can be dual weapons. Players will make that selection. They'll create those dual weapons as as bespoke single items that when equipped will occupy both the main and offhand; and then how we handle the attack speeds is we offer animations at a particular speed and then we adjust that with a modifier based on whatever is influencing that: either increase or slow down in speed.[104] – Steven Sharif
Weapon swapping
Weapon swapping is possible while in combat but armor cannot be swapped while in combat.[109][110][95][96][97][111]
- You may not swap armor when you're in combat, but you may swap your weapons; and there's obviously a few reasons of why this can be important: We're a itemization agnostic class design, so players equip with items that there are most necessary based on the adversary or the challenge that they're facing; and so we want that to be available for players to swap with weapons.[109] – Steven Sharif
- Previously it was stated that swapping weapons (from inventory) into a hand or range slot is not possible in combat.[110] Prior to this, weapon swapping was said to be subject to a cooldown period (in the range of a few seconds) following any damage taken or done by the player.[112][113]
Item rendering
Items that are dragged out of a player's inventory are destroyed.[114]
- Allowing player-dropped items (such as Gear and Currency) to exist in the world is likely not going to be allowed.[114][115]
Class weapons and armor
Weapons and armor are not class locked, but certain classes are more efficient with certain types of weapons or armor.[116][117] Certain abilities require certain items to be equipped.[118]
- Weapons are intended to be somewhat agnostic in the sense that you can find a way for a weapon to be utilized by different classes. Not just the rogue is going to be able to use daggers. Because if you restrict equipment through that, it makes the economy more difficult to have sustainability across the market of items.[119] – Steven Sharif
- Q: We had stated that we were going to allow people to use any class combination, which would be both your archetypes together, being able to use any weapon. Do we see problems that could occur with that, for instance like a bow tank, or an orb tank or things like- will there be some strangeness there, or are there problems that you first are foreseeing in the future?
- A: We're giving a lot of flexibility to the crafters in our game. They get to help define the stat block that a particular item, weapon, or gear has; and that stat block can be relevant to any particular class or archetype combination. So in that sense the idea is, no not to see any strangeness there or not to see any elements that would dissuade a person from that customization perspective.[120] – Steven Sharif
Racial weapons and armor

Violet light and myself are wearing exactly the same armor set right: Same stats, same everything, but it drops for her it looks one way, it drops for me it looks another way; and... a small part of that is gender, but then the other part of it is race. So because I was a Vaelune in that playthrough my armor was in the Vaelune style; and when she picked it up it was in the elven style because she was an elf. So that kind of gives you an example of sort of the breadth of looks that we're going for and how we kind of try to capture like who you are as as a character and kind of allow you to kind of build your look that way.[122] – Jeffrey Bard

We have essentially sets that exist across all races; and each race that dons those armor sets is going to have their own racial influence on the presentation of those particular sets. So that's something that's unique in how each of the races get diversified.[124] – Steven Sharif
Weapons and armor are not race locked, but armor will take on a racial appearance.[124][125][126]
- The customization of equipment per race is really focused on Armor sets not Weapon props. Weapon props will, from a model standpoint, will translate pretty one-to-one across the races.[127] – Steven Sharif
- Racial appearance of gear is focused on Armor. Weapons will not change in appearance but will scale in size based on race.[128][127]
- Let's say for example you have the Eagle set or something, right: The Eagle set has in art, it has a thematic design that's going to include certain attachments to the armor. It's going to include color palette and theme. It's going to have some aspects to it that define it as the Eagle set, right. When a Elf wears the Eagle set or when an Orc wears the Eagle set, you obviously have two different cultures there; and you don't want to stomp out that culture by assigning a de facto 'This is the Eagle set and this is how it looks on everybody.' What we want to have is cultural influences play a role in showing how that set looks.[127] – Steven Sharif
- Racial appearance of gear sets is tied to the character model of that race.[70]
- When you say, what if I'm an Orc but want to look like an Elf and I want my Eagle set to be the Elf representation? Well the issue becomes there that you know Orcs have a different organic model. You know, their body is different than that of the Elf. So, from a scope-creep standpoint, it's one thing to add different influences that represent the cultures that are donning the armor; it's another thing to adapt each influence as a matrix that can be worn pretty much by everything. From a scope perspective, that's a very difficult task for the character artists to kind of tackle. So instead what we've done is, in order to facilitate a variety of cultural representation between the races but allow for the sharing of assets like different armor sets, we give different representations of those armor sets to each race.[70] – Steven Sharif
Crafted gear
Crafted items (also referred to as Finished goods, or Final products) are items produced by crafter artisans using crafting stations.[129][130][62][131][132]
- Crafted gear is considered best-in-slot in Ashes of Creation.[62]
- Previously it was stated that crafted items will be on-par with boss dropped items.[133][134][63]
- Crafters will be able to assign different skills/abilities and stats on gear.[56][57]
- Master crafters will be able to influence several (but not all) stats on their crafted items.[56][58]
- Crafted gear in the game is the best gear... One thing that I'm not a fan of is that you develop a crafting system in a game and you've spent a lot of time making this from a material and resource perspective. All the tables that you can receive, all the connectivity in the economy and how crafting is associated with the game; and then you undermine the crafting entirely by presenting a separate route of gear acquisition that is on-par with the crafting efforts. So here you have these people who are acquiring all of the resources getting, all the recipes, leveling up their professions and then everything they make is less or equal to anything you could just have chosen the easier path of and gone down the questing and received the best gear. So what we do focus on is that crafters make the best shit. Excuse me, the best things.[62] – Steven Sharif
- The rarity of crafted items will be commensurate with the effort required to gather, process and craft the items.[63]
- Stats on crafted items will vary based on the item's rarity.[59]
- That plays into our crafting system in and of itself. The idea is for those stats to be variables that can be kind of dictated based on the mastery level of the particular crafter; and the higher they become a master of those professions, whether it be for armor or for weapons or for accessories, they're going to have some agency and put their mark on essentially what items they're introducing into the economy.[59] – Steven Sharif
- Crafters are able to influence what their crafted items will look like.[56][135]
- At the moment, harnessing corruption to warp items into demonic or decayed things is not on the cards.[136]
- A crafter's name is embedded in the items they craft.[137]
- We believe that every item that exists in the world should in some way reflect its creator. As such, there will be extreme versatility in our crafting system – giving crafters the ability to create unique items that represent their strengths and weaknesses.[138]

Item creation suite
An "item creation suite" that allows crafters to create unique appearances for items has been discussed as a future possibility.[139]
Gear inspection/ Threat assessment
You decide to gank the player, but find out that you have been ambushed![140]
Players will have a buff on their nameplate that indicates the gear set they are wearing. Other players will be able to see this buff by targeting that player at a distance.[141][142][143]
- This will indicate the type of armor (cloth, leather, plate) that they are predominantly wearing.[60][142]
- You can target a player. You're going to see what type of armor they have based on a buff they have available to them because obviously cosmetics can change appearance. You might have different silhouettes as a result of that.[60] – Steven Sharif
- The border will indicate the level and quality of the tier set.[141][142][144]
- The developers believe that inspecting gear to obtain an exact equipment list or gear score may lead to "unwelcome behavior".[146]
- When you see a player approaching you and they're wearing a transmog you know you don't know if that person is a high damage mitigation against physical damage or against magical damage and essentially the way we overcome that is through you being able to target a player at a distance and they will have a buff that's present on them that you will see, which indicates that essentially the piece set that they are wearing. It is important for players to be able to ascertain from a threat assessment standpoint what they're going up against if they're actively checking that, and that will be available.[143] – Steven Sharif
Character nameplate

Nameplates really actually require a big refactor on our end that we haven't done yet. However, that is something that tech art and engineering, as well as our UX/UI team are going to be doing over the course of probably the next month to month and a half. It's a big refactor both from performance reasons- how we're going to be able to occlude those nameplates within world obstacles and line-of-sight as well as prioritizing and clamping their sizes and distances that need a bit of a refactor; and of course their visual appearance. So that's work that's still outstanding.[150] – Steven Sharif
Nameplates are displayed above the head.[151]
- Player character nameplates will have first, and optionally last name (surname).[151]
- The name of the character's guild is displayed next to their name.[152]
- The character's nameplate will deteriorate to give an indication of how much damage they have taken.[153][154][155]
- An icon will identify the character's class.[141]
- Hovering over a player nameplate will show information such as level, class name, and archetype combo.[141]
- A buff icon will indicate the character's gear and grade.[141][142][143]
- The size and priority of nameplates will be relate to their distance (away from the camera).[150]
- The visibility of nameplates can be obscured by in-game objects, such as trees; by utility skills, such as Camouflage or Stealth; or through the use of disguises.[156][157]
- UI settings will enable nameplates to be hidden, resized, and customized.[158]
- Summoner summons' creature type appears in the nameplate above the summon. This cannot be changed by the player.[159]
- Mob nameplates will have indicators that identify resistances, buffs, end elite status.[160]
- A star format may be utilized to indicate hit point allocation.[160]
Nameplates in the party UI indicate the player's choice of secondary archetype.[148]
- A padlock icon indicates that the secondary archetype is not yet unlocked.[148]
Item durability

The decay system is not going to be some worthless "Oh I'm just going to throw some gold into this and it's a simple gold sink". It's actually going to require some base materials in order to repair decayed items; and decay occurs from death and also the destruction and disable system. For the weapons over the over-enchanting will require those materials as well. So creating that dependency I think is healthy for the crafting economy.[161] – Steven Sharif
There is item durability (item decay) in Ashes of Creation.[162]
- Materials are required in order to restore the performance of decayed items.[166][163][161][167][168]
- Item decay does not destroy items, but it acts as an materials sink.[169][163][162]
- If you allow it to get to certain stages, or to get to a destructed stage then it requires a lot of material components in order to return back to its former glory.[166] – Steven Sharif
- Over enchanting an item comes with the risk of durability loss if a safety margin is exceeded.[161][171][172]
- There is durability in the game... It's not going to be a trivial durability. There is a potential to destroy gear (weapons and armor), but there is also an ability to reforge that destroyed gear using a portion of the materials necessary as well as finding an item creator who can reforge it.[162] – Steven Sharif
Item repair

For example: if you have an iron sword and then the sword gets damaged from use, you have to use more iron to repair it; and what that does is... make sure that there's significant sinks in the game for base materials so that you are creating a scarcity and demand that's present on the creation of higher goods as well as supplying the necessary decay components for the world.[168] – Steven Sharif
Item repair will cost crafting materials.[163][168][162]
- 0% durability will unequip items, increasing its repair cost.[170]
- Damaged gear can be reforged at a player stall using a portion of the materials that were necessary to craft the item.[161][167][168]
- There may be additional constraints for repairing "very unique items", such as having a crafter and recipe to effectuate repairs. This is subject to testing.[169]
- There is no limit to the number of times an item can be repaired.[174]
There will be ways to repair destructible structures (such as walls and gates) and also repair (or re-craft) siege weapons that were damaged during sieges.[175]
- There's a lot of ancillary activities that can be had during sieges... It's obviously strategy and tactics and you know raid-versus-raid components, but also you want to have individual contributions where players can do things during the siege to aid in the greater effort so to speak; and it doesn't require you having 50 people by your side to effectuate that influence over something. So repairs are great ways to do that. Repairs for walls, repairs for gates, being able to spawn and essentially craft the designs for specific types of siege weapons to provide those to the team.[175] – Steven Sharif
Item rarities
Item rarities in Ashes of Creation.
Legendary items
There is a small RNG chance of looting rare and legendary items or crafting materials from mobs based on the level, status and type of mob. This also applies to harvesting resources with a gathering profession.[176]
- There is a much higher chance that materials and unique recipes are dropped that can be used to craft items of equitable value.[177][178][179]
- Legendary equipment is only dropped by Legendary world bosses.[180]
- Legendary equipment will have a roughly 6-12% improvement in base stats, subject to testing and balancing.[181]
At each stage from Gatherer to Processor to Crafter you are required to have certain prerequisites before those elite types of materials can be essentially gathered, processed, or crafted.[178] – Steven Sharif
- Gatherers must have high quality tools to gather rare resources.[178]
- Processors must have high tier processing buildings on their freehold to produce rare materials.[178]
- Crafters must also satisfy certain prerequisites to craft legendary equipment.[178]
The amount of effort needed and interdependencies across the different types of players – between raiders and PvPers and crafters and even role players and the taverns and businesses: the processors and gatherers – all of those systems will likely have a component that lends toward creating or crafting that legendary item... We want to stay away from the highly RNGd system, and instead take our multiple progression paths that we are offering the players and put the construction components for achieving these legendary items within them so it encourages communities to work together because it's going to be difficult for just one person by themselves to gather everything. Not to say that they couldn't in an economic sense, by buying those components, that's possible. But achieving them from a time investment standpoint we want it to be considerably less RNG focussed.[179] – Steven Sharif
Certain legendary items may be limited to one per server at any given time.[182][183]
- If the player character leaves the server then the item will become available for acquisition through whatever means it was acquired previously.[182]
There are absolutely legendary items and they're not items that are attained easily nor are they granted out in a volume. There might even be items that are single items that will exist on the server at any given time.[183]
A legendary weapon is easily distinguished by its visual appearance.[179]
It will be a very ornate and detailed weapon, more so than any other weapon or piece of equipment in the game. It will also include some awesome looking effects that won't too gaudy, you know they won't be too bright and shiny so that it doesn't look good, but they will be subtle and people will notice it and know wow that guy has this weapon.[179] – Steven Sharif
Legendary items are not intended to be temporary.[184]
- A notable exception to this is Royal mounts.[185]
The fact there is only one of them... or very very few of them depending on what it is. I think that in and of itself is a balance component right and you need to make sure that the players who are striving for those legendary things and who are devoting the time energy, resources in order to achieve them are accurately rewarded... We do not intend on having legendary items that are temporary.[184] – Steven Sharif
Discovery of legendary items will unlock further chapters of the Lore.[186]
Switching gear
Trading gear
There will be player to player trading in Ashes of Creation.[188][189]
- Player to player trading, interacting with vendors or NPCs, and the ability to access storage is disabled for corrupted players.[190][191][114]
- Q: Will Ashes of Creation have player-to-player trading? Will there be anything stopping me from gifting a friend that's fresh to the game a bunch of in-game money to help them get on their feet quickly?
- A: There won't be anything to stop you from doing that.[188] – Steven Sharif
Sharing gear with alts
- Progression pathways in Ashes of Creation are per-character.[194][195]
- Storage space is shared between characters on the same account.[194][196][197]
- Characters on the same account are able to share player housing, including furniture and freehold workstations.[194]
- Cosmetics can be reassigned to characters within an account, with a potential cooldown period.[198][199][200]
- Alts within a single account may have different professions.[201]
Gear appearance

We want to be realistic with the application of particular types of armor, such as plate armor. In this regard for the different sexes there's a fine line that has to be drawn between accentuating the form of the sex as well as making it somewhat realistic and actually applicable to the environment.[202] – Steven Sharif
Gear is intended to be realistic in appearance.[203][204]
- There will not be "oversized" weapons.[205]
- Armor will not be overly sexual in appearance.[204]
- I'm more of the mind that it wouldn't really serve a purpose to have bikini plate armor, just in like reality, if you're going to have armor, it should be protective. I think from a fashion statement is enjoyable for some people, but it's a kind of an immersive issue.[203] – Steven Sharif
- Some armor and costumes will be more revealing than others, but there will not be nudity in the game.[206]
- There might be sliders, but there are not gonna be naked sliders.[206] – Steven Sharif
Armor will take on a racial appearance.[127] Weapons will scale in size based on race.[128]
Each race is getting its custom geo pieces, which then will share thematic components such as color palette, attachments, design filigree. Those types of things will get shared across the geo but generally you're going to see unique races with unique geo.[207] – Steven Sharif
- Cosmetics can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[208]
Players can change gear colors using dyes.[209][210]
Helmet display can be toggled on and off.[43]
Particle effects are used to denote the importance and rarity of some weapons.[212]
Crafters are able to influence what their crafted items will look like.[56][135]
Weapons are able to be sheathed.[90][98]
Appearance slots/Transmogs
Gear will have appearance slots (Transmutation/Transmog/cosmetic slots) that are used to copy the appearance of an item (in some cases).[213][8]
- There are rules when applying cosmetics to specific items, unlike costumes, which don't have level restrictions.[214]
- Cosmetic slots can be toggled on or off on their character by the player.[215]
- A "default player appearance" may be automatically applied during sieges or other large scale battles to improve client-side performance.[216][217]
- Cosmetics, whether purchased from the shop or earned in game, are an important component of MMORPGS I personally enjoy; and there's a lot of collectors out there who spend a great deal of time either in-game achieving these things or spend money purchasing them from the cosmetic only marketplace; and we don't want to demean or reduce that achievement or that expenditure. So it's going to be situational where the default appearance will be applied and can be activated.[216] – Steven Sharif
Attachments
Attachments are able to be unlocked as flair pieces to armor to create a customizable look.[218]
- There will be hundreds of attachments available ranging from a small clasp to the front plate of a breast plate.[218]
Racial skins
Racial skins enable a player to change their character's racial appearance.[219][220]
- Racial skins transform the race of the character to that skin. The original racial appearance of the character is entirely replaced.[221]
- Racial skins can be toggled on and off.[220]
You're changing your race over to that, which means that you won't look uniquely different if you were a Vek angel or a Human angel.[221] – Steven Sharif
Racial skins are not costumes. This means that armor and character customization is possible on these.[222]
There are plans to create other racial skins.[133]
- Some potential future ideas include undead and werewolf (lycan) skins.[225]
Costumes

The costume cosmetics that are included in each month's pre-order set are indeed a full piece, and when you put it on it will cover your entire appearance. You will not be able to mix and match/toggle those pieces individually (other than your helmet) when you're wearing the entire costume. This is partially why there is a separate category for accessories - those are able to be worn/equipped on a more individualized basis, so you can mix and match to your liking![227] – Sarah Flanagan
Costumes are available for purchase from the cosmetic store.[228]
- They do not include any weapons pictured.[229]
- Costumes are one piece outfits that cover all gear slots regardless of armor type.[230][227][231][232][233]
- Full costumes do not mix and match pieces.[233] – Steven Sharif
- Costumes don't have a level restriction or require an in-game item to be obtained first.[234][214]
- Costumes are not gender or race locked, but can adapt based on a character's gender and race.[235][236][208][237]
- Racial skins appear along with any costume appearances.[224][222]
- All hoods and head slot items, whether part of a complete costume or individual gear, will have the option to be shown or hidden on the character by the player.[238][227][239]
Dyeable items
Dyes only affect tagged portions of dyeable armor or cosmetic items.[240]
Outside of wanting to keep maybe some identity from a lore perspective; for example if you have like a white lion's suit of armor, you may not want that white lion suit of armor to be black or blue. So, it's possible. It depends on the costume itself.[240] – Steven Sharif
Modular armor

You can kind of start to see like some of the components that we put together that we can mix and match and kind of make new armors from. This is kind of like the base chassis for all of that.[241] – Jeffrey Bard
Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[241] – Mat Broome
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will have three different armor themes: Plate, leather and robe.[242]
You can actually have three different types of themes: You have plate, you'll have leather and you'll have robe. So for every armor set that we're showing at each one of those tiers, you're actually gonna have nine unique looks to pick from.[242] – Mat Broome
