Some of the following information has not been recently confirmed by the developers and may not be on the current development roadmap.
  • Facial hair is characteristic of the Dünir, not the Niküa.[7]
  • Female Dünir beards will not match that of the male. It will be more of a braided option that is not as voluminous.[7]

Dünzenkell

Dwarf concept art.[8]

Dwarves are born with the beard attached to their skull and it just takes time for the beard to grow out of the skin, but the beard is there from the start.[9]Steven Sharif

Dwarf facts from in-game.[ citation needed ]

Little known fact; Dwarves actually have the strongest leg muscles among the divine races on Verra.[ citation needed ]

Dünzenkell Dwarves are split into two races: Dünir and Niküa.[10]

Deep in the mountains of Verra legend tells of a forge created by the gods, from whence all Dwarves are originated. Fabled to be the first created of the major races, the Dwarves are said to have arrived on the continents with ships made of stone and steel. Dwarven smiths and craftsmen are found far and wide across Verra. The center of the Dwarven race is the nation of Dünzenkell, found deep in the northern mountains. Dwarven society tends to be heavily matriarchal and their clans existing under the oftentimes eldest matriarch. Dwarves are closely connected to one-another by alliances forged between family guilds. The Dwarven child is marked at a young age with his or her guild sigil. Some dwarves banished from Dünzenkell or having chose to walk a path alone will often have their sigils burned from their skin.[11]Steven Sharif

The Dünzenkell nation, deep within the mountains of Verra exists the oldest nation in the world. The Dünzenkell have been known as many names over the ages, but only one name has graced the highest mountain, within which their capital has stood since the beginning of recorded history: Dün. The Dwarves of the Dünzenkell rule through a council of guilds. A royal family is chosen once every 200 years by this council to rule. Currently the right to rule falls on the shoulders of King Grimlay. It has been nearly 400 years since a king has lead the Dünzenkell. Traditionally this role falls to the matriarchs of the family. Expeditions are often sent into the Underrealm from Dün; and there many believe lies the source of secrets among the Dwarves and their success with mastering artisanship. Untold magic lies deep within Verra. It's source not known to many. Dünzenkell has long benefited from this source though. It has fueled the expansion of the Dwarven kingdoms throughout the northern mountains.[12]Steven Sharif

Dünir

Latest Dünir character model concept art.[13][3]

This is some work that's been done to amend the dwarven body and appearance from the Dünir's perspective. It's still a work in progress. However it's very important that you guys recognize our goal is to take community feedback into account when we're developing the game and that's the whole purpose of a transparent development process.[14]Steven Sharif

DunirWatermark.png Dünir (pronounced Doo-near[16][17]) are a playable Dünzenkell Dwarven race in Ashes of Creation.[18][10]

Artisan - Reliability - Deliberation
The Dünir, hardy and resilient, value craftsmanship, and reliability, thriving in treacherous terrains with unmatched dedication.[18]
Loyal to the monarch, yet independent in their pursuits, Dunir often perfect trades, or seek riches underground. Their military is renowned for its defensive prowess, reflecting their steadfast nature.[18]
Known for strong alliances, the Dunir are slow to forget slights, making their grudges legendary. Their stubbornness, and loyalty shape their cautious, but steadfast political stance.[18]

Artistic influence

Dünir have a Nordic cultural influence.[25]

Niküa

NikuaWatermark.png Niküa (pronounced Ni-koo-ah[16][17]) are a playable Dünzenkell Dwarven race in Ashes of Creation.[18][10]

Exploration - Optimism - Hospitality
Three things matter most to the Nikua: family, open sky, and a sail full of wind. They're renowned explorers, sailors, fisherfolk, and adventurers who maintain the reliability of their cousins, the Dunir, without the discipline.[18]
The Nikua act according to the decisions of an elected council of five elders, but are generally only loosely associated outside of their home waters. Their adaptability, and community-oriented nature guide their social structure.[18]
Their accommodating nature is balanced by the council's unanimous decisions, shaping cautious diplomacy.[18]

Artistic influence

The Niküa have a Polynesian influence.[28][29]

Character appearance

Facial adjustments in the Alpha-2 character creator (first pass).[30]

There is a great variation that's going to be available from a character standpoint when creating your character, especially around the face. Whether it be the shape of the jawline, the cheeks, the ears, the nose, the lips. You know we want to provide a lot of options and an agency to the player to customize their character appearance.[31]Steven Sharif

Character appearance can be customized in the character creator (CC)[33] and via in-game salons/barbershops.[34][35]

We want there to be a lot of room for people to manifest their own identity, to role play how they want to from an appearance standpoint. There's going to be parameters within which you will be able to customize a character. We want the culture and the identity of the races to exist in a range that makes them easily identifiable from other players and other cultures. So, because of that, we have to have a spectrum you can exist on. There will be a lot of hair variants you can do, body art tattoos that you can apply. You'll be able to play with the scales of the facial structure, the bones, the height, width, the body fat percentage. You'll be able to add body hair on different parts of the body. If you want to have hair on your feet, you can dial that up.[7]Steven Sharif
  • Character models are focused on realism.[36]
  • A player will see a generic character before customization.[37]
  • Character designs will have influences from a wide range of cultures, such as European, African and Asian.[38]
  • Lolis will not be in the game.[39][40]
  • Sliders and other controls, such as color palettes, will offer flexibility in customization but there will be limits based on race, gender, and the artistic style guidelines that the developers are adhering to.[41][42][39][43][44]
There's going to be constraints to the sliders, so that was one of those big questions as work began on the character creator: How much agency do you want to allow pulling like the lower lip all the way down in this weird deformed look, or having like [an] offset cheek that's just asymmetrical to the side of the face. There's not going to be the ability or agency to create those types of weird character things. However you will have the ability to move, slide, change, grow, decrease all those components, but they'll be kept in a more reasonable and presented way in the same sense you won't be able to change the appearance of the dwarven, nor the Dünir or the Niküan races to, in my opinion, create what would be traditionally considered a Loli character.[39]Steven Sharif
